EmbraceSculptree 2008

Picture of myself and “Embrace”; the sculpture I produced over the event at Westonbirt Arboretum in August 2008.  It was a busy and enjoyable week where I got to meet and observe other wood sculptors.

Nawies 2008

My next big project is to carve this design “Navvies” in to redundant lock gates as part of a screen at the Black Sluice pumping station at Boston.  Funded by the Lincolnshire Waterways Partnership this is part of a scheme to reopen waterways to pleasure boats in the Fens.

Tennyson Trail and Latest Work

Tennyson Trail Pike SculptureI have been working on carvings on the “Tennyson Trail” which follows a Sustrans cycle path along the banks of the River Witham through the fens of Lincolnshire.  The trail takes its themes from the poems of Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

I have completed a huge carving of a pike in oak engraved with a line from Tennyson’s poem “The Brook” and am working on some life size sculptures of Lincolnshire curly coat pigs. The pike is pictured right - click on image for detail.

We have recently learned that we have planning permission for a tall, oak “River Tower” sculpture for the same trail.   I have also started work on a 10m long dragon for Boston West Primary School.

Sculptree Event

I am chuffed to report that I have been selected to take part in the annual “Sculptree” event at The National Arboretum, Westonbirt from 18 to 25 August 2008.  I will be one of 12 wood sculptors taking part in the event and I plan to produce a sculpture of a couple embracing.  The event is part of the annual “Festival of the Tree” (www.forestry.gov.uk/westonbirt-festivalofthetree ).  Sale of the work will support “Tree Aid”, a charity promoting tree planting by local communities to combat desertification in the Sahel.

Art on the Map

All of this work means that I have to give the annual studios open event in Lincolnshire “Art on the Map” a miss this year.

I do have sculptures for sale in the gallery “Wild at Heart” at Broxholm near Lincoln www.wildgardenart.com  and in the Harding House Gallery on Steep Hill in Lincoln www.hardinghousegallery.co.uk.

I shall also be exhibiting in the garden of Hall Farm Nursery at Harpswell near Gainsborough in September.

Tennyson Trail

SustransIn 2007-2008 I will be working on three large sculptures for the Tennyson Trail on the Sustrans cycle path between Lincoln and Boston, Lincolnshire.

We have now got planning permission to produce some large sculptures as part of the Tennyson Sculpture Trail on the Sustrans cycle path beside the River Witham between Lincoln and Boston.  I will be producing carvings of a large pike (fish) and some big, fat Lincolnshire curly coat pigs a breed now extinct.
