Black Sluice mural “Navvies”

Black Sluice muralThis has kept me busy over the winter of 2008/9 a scene of labourers or “Navvies” digging the South Forty Foot Drain. It is carved into the redundant lock gates through which the drain emptied into the tidal river Witham for twenty years, they were replaced because the lock is being reopened to navigation and the mural is part of the enhancement.

Black Sluice muralThe gates are 6.5m by 4m each totalling 18 tonnes and are constructed of greenheart; a very hard, dense wood resistant to decay, they are also full of nails so were very hard on the tools. I had a rest from the chainsaw and used an “arbortech industrial” cutting disc on an angle grinder and got through about 5 of each, I also found an adze useful. I had a lot of help from my brother Mark with the sanding and metal work. Grand opening 20 March.

This was an introduction to relief carving for me, on a grand scale.
