Folded Arms Figure
I have produced two versions of this figure, both of elm, one was the first human figure that I had attempted. It was life size and restricted by the size of the wood but it is about the curves of the torso which the truncated form emphasises.

Lying Figure
Life size, I wanted to reproduce the dramatic “skyline” of a woman’s hip, waist and shoulder when lying on her side.
Elm, 2006 |

Ellie
I had long wanted to produce a figure merging with the wood and this was the result, in elm and almost life size.
The contours of the back are emphasised by those of the wood, and nice bum! 2005 |

Kneeling Woman
Life size, this was another attempt to use the interaction of the curves of he body with the contours of the wood.
Elm, 2006 |

Stretch
The second female figure that I produced; emphasising the arched curve of the back, now at Elsham Hall in North Lincolnshire.
Life size, of cedar, 2005 |

Running Girl
Inspired by my daughter Tilly aged 6 with the wonderful energy that compels her to run everywhere.
Elm wood’s resistance to splitting allowed me to realise a life-size figure supported on just one leg. 2006 |

Sleep
I had a log of sweet chestnut timber that had characteristically split along radial rings (“ring shake”), its surface was beautifully distressed and I was able to pop a section off, ideal for carving a subtle sleeping face within the wood, untreated so that the face will weather to match the rest of the surface.
1m tall, 2005 |

Sleeping Giant
This face is as if part-submerged, of oak, untreated to weather and age.
1m tall, 2006 |
